I’ve had the privilege of staying at some of the world’s most exclusive resorts. But few destinations have captured my heart quite like Bali.

This Indonesian island is a paradise for those seeking the ultimate in comfort, style, and tropical beauty. Over the years, I’ve made it my mission to experience Bali’s best luxury accommodations firsthand.

In this article, I’ll be sharing my top 10 picks for Bali’s most luxurious resorts. Along with personal anecdotes and insider tips to help you plan your own unforgettable escape.

Why Choose a Luxury Resort in Bali?

What makes a stay at a Bali luxury resort so special? For me, it’s the way these properties seamlessly blend world-class service and amenities with the unique culture and natural beauty of the island.

I remember my first stay in Ubud. I woke up that first morning to the sound of birdsong and the scent of frangipani blossoms. Stepping out onto my private terrace, I was greeted by a sea of green โ€“ lush rice paddies and swaying palms as far as the eye could see.

That sense of being in harmony with nature is something I’ve experienced at every luxury resort I’ve stayed at in Bali. Whether it’s a beachfront villa in Nusa Dua or a tented camp in the heart of the Ubud jungle, each property has found a way to integrate the outdoors with the indoors in a way that feels utterly seamless.

Of course, the level of service is also unparalleled. At the Bulgari Resort in Uluwatu, I mentioned in passing to my butler that I loved the scent of the resort’s signature aromatherapy oil. The next day, I returned to my room to find a beautifully wrapped bottle of the oil on my bedside table โ€“ a gift from the management.

It’s these small touches that elevate a stay from memorable to truly magical. And in Bali, those magical moments seem to happen on a daily basis.

The Top 10 Ultra Luxury Resorts in Bali

Based on my experiences, here are my top picks for Bali’s most luxurious resorts.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Ubud

Luxury two-story villa with private pool, wooden deck, and thatched roof pavilion surrounded by tropical gardens
A private riverfront villa featuring traditional Balinese architecture and modern luxury amenities

I’ll never forget the first time I crossed the suspension bridge leading to the Four Seasons Sayan. It was like stepping into another world โ€“ a world of mist-shrouded jungle, rushing rivers, and serene rice paddies.

The resort’s treehouse-style villas are a marvel of design, with their thatched roofs, hand-carved wooden furnishings, and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in the lush greenery. Waking up here feels like waking up in the pages of a storybook.

Each luxury villa features a private infinity pool immersed in Ubud’s tropical landscape

The resort’s riverside pool terrace seamlessly blends with the surrounding tropical landscape

The dramatic arrival experience at Four Seasons Sayan features a suspended bridge leading to the iconic circular lotus pond lobby

But the real magic happens at the resort’s Sacred River Spa. Nestled alongside the Ayung River, the spa offers treatments that incorporate local healing traditions and ingredients.

The Chakra Ceremony, which includes a cleansing smoke ritual and a crystal sound healing bath, left me feeling utterly transformed.

    Amankila, East Bali

Aerial view of Amankila resort showing private pool villas nestled in tropical forest along black sand beach with turquoise waters of East Bali
Amankila’s intimate collection of suites and villas is thoughtfully arranged along the jungle-covered hillside of East Bali

Amankila holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first luxury resorts I ever stayed at in Bali, and it set the bar incredibly high for every subsequent visit.

Perched on a cliffside overlooking the Lombok Strait, Amankila feels like a secret hideaway. The resort’s iconic three-tiered infinity pool is an architectural marvel, seeming to merge seamlessly with the ocean beyond.

What I love about Amankila is the way it immerses you in the local culture. The resort offers guided treks to nearby villages, where you can witness age-old crafts like palm leaf weaving and traditional salt-making. It’s a reminder that even in the lap of luxury, there’s always more to learn and discover.

    Capella Ubud

Aerial view of luxury tented accommodation with private pool deck, covered living area, and tropical landscaping nestled in Ubud jungle at Capella Ubud
Each tented villa is thoughtfully positioned to ensure privacy while maximizing jungle views

When I heard that Capella was opening a tented camp in the heart of the Ubud jungle, I knew I had to experience it for myself. And let me tell you โ€“ it did not disappoint.

Designed by celebrated architect Bill Bensley, Capella Ubud is like no other resort I’ve stayed at. Each of the 23 tents is a whimsical blend of vintage-inspired furnishings and modern luxuries, with copper bathtubs, four-poster beds, and private saltwater plunge pools.

But what really sets Capella apart is the sense of adventure that permeates every stay. One evening, I joined the resort’s camp rangers for a nighttime trek through the jungle, spotting rare birds and learning about the medicinal uses of local plants.

Luxury tented accommodation with blue canvas roof and wooden deck nestled in lush Ubud jungle with dramatic evening lighting at Capella Ubud
The resort’s tented retreats appear to float among the treetops of Ubud’s pristine rainforest

Private plunge pool with decorative brass monkey water feature and stone wall surrounded by lush jungle vegetation at Capella Ubud Bali
Each tent’s private pool features playful design elements that celebrate the surrounding wildlife

It was a thrilling reminder that luxury doesn’t have to mean being cocooned from the outside world โ€“ sometimes, it means embracing it fully.

As I continue my journey through Bali’s top luxury resorts, I’m reminded again and again of the island’s unique magic. Each property offers its own interpretation of luxury, but all are united by a deep reverence for the natural world and a commitment to providing unforgettable experiences.

The St. Regis Bali Resort, Nusa Dua

Aerial view of luxury lagoon villas with private pools, tropical gardens, and dramatic sunset over the Indian Ocean at The St. Regis Bali Resort
An aerial perspective reveals the resort’s stunning layout of lagoon villas nestled among swaying palms at golden hour

Stepping into The St. Regis Bali is like entering a world of refined elegance. I’ll never forget the moment I arrived โ€“ greeted by name, ushered into a cool, fragrant lobby, and immediately offered a refreshing lemongrass-infused welcome drink.

What sets The St. Regis apart is its impeccable service. The signature St. Regis butler service is truly next level.

The resort’s signature lagoon pool features traditional Balinese pavilions and pristine blue waters surrounded by lush tropical gardens

During one stay, I casually mentioned my fondness for local fruits. The next morning, I woke to find a beautifully arranged platter of exotic Balinese fruits on my terrace โ€“ a thoughtful gesture that exemplifies the attention to detail here.

The resort’s beachfront location in Nusa Dua is prime for those seeking pristine sands and calm waters. I spent many an afternoon lounging by the expansive lagoon-style pool, cocktail in hand, marveling at how the pool seemed to merge seamlessly with the ocean beyond.

    Bulgari Resort Bali, Uluwatu

Illuminated infinity pool with luxury loungers, thatched pavilion, and ocean views at twilight at Bulgari Resort Bali
Each villa features a private infinity pool that creates a magical atmosphere as day turns to evening

Perched atop a 150-meter cliff in Uluwatu, the Bulgari Resort Bali is a masterclass in understated luxury. As someone who’s stayed at several Bulgari properties worldwide, I can confidently say that their Bali outpost is one of their finest.

What struck me most about this resort was its seamless blend of Italian design and Balinese craftsmanship. The hand-cut volcanic stone walls, bangkiray wood decks, and alang-alang roofs create a sense of place that’s uniquely Balinese.

Each villa features a private infinity pool surrounded by meticulously landscaped tropical gardens and traditional pavilions

The resort’s private beach is a true gem. Accessible via a funicular that descends dramatically down the cliff face, it feels like your own private slice of paradise.

I spent a memorable afternoon here, alternating between dips in the crystal-clear water and lounging on plush daybeds, attended to by the attentive beach staff.

    Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Ubud

Aerial view of Mandapa resort showing traditional villas with private pools arranged around working rice terraces along the Ayung River in Ubud
The resort’s design pays homage to a traditional Balinese village, complete with working rice paddies and riverside villas

Mandapa feels less like a resort and more like a beautifully curated Balinese village. Set against the backdrop of lush rainforest and terraced rice paddies, with the Ayung River flowing through its heart.

It’s a place that invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature. During my stay, I participated in a traditional water purification ritual at the resort’s temple.

Terraced resort architecture built into hillside with traditional Balinese design, featuring rice paddies and tropical gardens at Mandapa Ubud
Mandapa’s architecture pays homage to a traditional Balinese village, seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape

Led by a local Balinese priest, it was a deeply moving experience that left me feeling cleansed and centered. It’s these kinds of authentic cultural experiences that set Mandapa apart.

The dining at Mandapa is also exceptional. I still dream about the nine-course degustation menu I enjoyed at Kubu, the resort’s signature bamboo restaurant.

Dining in a private cocoon overlooking the river, each course more exquisite than the last, was truly a feast for all senses.

    Alila Villas Uluwatu

Wooden cabana structure extending over infinity pool with pink sunset sky and palm trees at Alila Villas Uluwatu
The resort’s signature cabana creates a dramatic silhouette against Uluwatu’s famous sunset sky

If there’s one resort that epitomizes modern tropical luxury, it’s Alila Villas Uluwatu. The first time I walked into my pool villa, I was struck by the seamless indoor-outdoor design.

Floor-to-ceiling windows slide open completely, allowing the ocean breeze to flow through the space. I love Alila’s commitment to sustainability without compromising on luxury.

The resort uses local materials, employs water conservation techniques, and even has its own waste management facility. It’s refreshing to see a luxury property taking such a strong stance on environmental responsibility.

The resort’s clifftop bar, The Sunset Cabana, is not to be missed. Suspended over the cliff edge, it offers some of the most spectacular sunset views I’ve ever seen.

Sipping on a perfectly crafted cocktail as the sun dips below the horizon is a memory I’ll cherish forever.

    The Mulia, Nusa Dua

Aerial view of The Mulia's signature pool with illuminated white statues, tropical gardens, and dramatic orange sunset sky over the Indian Ocean
The Mulia’s legendary Oasis Pool comes alive at sunset, with its iconic statues creating a majestic pathway to the sea

The Mulia is grand luxury on an impressive scale.

From the moment you enter the sweeping driveway, you know you’re in for something special. The sheer size of the resort can be overwhelming at first, but I found it offers a level of variety that’s hard to match elsewhere in Bali.

What stood out to me was the range of dining options. Over the course of a week-long stay, I never had to eat at the same restaurant twice. The Sunday brunch at Soleil is particularly impressive โ€“ a lavish affair that spans multiple cuisines and includes free-flow champagne.

The Mulia Spa is another highlight. The hydrotherapy pool, with its varying pressure showers and jet massages, is one of the best I’ve experienced.

    Six Senses Uluwatu

Modern clifftop restaurant with wooden and limestone architecture, featuring dramatic terraced design and ocean views at Six Senses Uluwatu
The resort’s sustainable architecture incorporates local materials and dramatic ocean vistas at every turn

Six Senses Uluwatu perfectly embodies the brand’s commitment to wellness and sustainability. Perched on the cliffs of Uluwatu, the resort offers breathtaking ocean views from virtually every vantage point.

What I appreciate about Six Senses is their holistic approach to wellness. During my stay, I underwent a wellness screening that formed the basis for a personalized program of spa treatments, fitness activities, and even dietary recommendations.

Insider Tips for Booking Your Bali Luxury Stay

Along the way I’ve picked up a few tricks to ensure you get the most out of your stay:

    1. Time your visit wisely: Bali’s high season runs from July to August and December to January. While the weather is ideal, prices skyrocket and resorts can feel crowded. I prefer visiting in May, June, or September for the perfect balance of good weather and relative tranquility.
    2. Book direct for perks: While it’s tempting to use third-party booking sites, I’ve found that booking directly with the resort often comes with unexpected perks. On my last stay at the Four Seasons Sayan, booking direct scored me a complimentary spa treatment and a romantic dinner for two.
    3. Leverage loyalty programs: If you’re a member of hotel loyalty programs, don’t forget to leverage your status. Even if the Bali property isn’t part of the program, mentioning your status can sometimes lead to upgrades or special treatment.
    4. Consider half-board options: Many resorts offer half-board packages that include breakfast and dinner. Given the high quality of resort dining in Bali, this can be excellent value. I particularly recommend this at more remote resorts like Amankila or Capella Ubud.
    5. Engage with your personal butler: Many luxury resorts in Bali offer butler service. Don’t be shy about using it! Your butler can arrange everything from in-room dining to custom excursions. At the St. Regis Bali, my butler even arranged a surprise birthday celebration for my partner.
    6. Book spa treatments in advance: Popular time slots at resort spas often book up quickly, especially for signature treatments. I always book my must-have treatments before arrival to avoid disappointment.
    7. Take advantage of complimentary activities: Luxury resorts in Bali often offer a range of complimentary activities, from yoga classes to cultural experiences. At Six Senses Uluwatu, I participated in a fascinating Balinese blessing ceremony at no extra cost.

Bali’s Luxury Is More Than Just Opulence

I can confidently say that this island offers some of the most extraordinary accommodation experiences in the world.

What sets Bali apart is not just the physical beauty of the resorts, but the warmth and grace of Balinese hospitality. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been moved by the genuine care and attention shown by staff members across these properties.

Luxury in Bali isn’t just about thread counts and infinity pools (although those are certainly nice). It’s about connecting with the island’s rich culture, immersing yourself in its stunning natural beauty, and allowing yourself to be transformed by the experience.

My advice? Allow yourself to be fully present. Put down your phone, breathe in the fragrant tropical air, and let the magic of Bali wash over you.

So pack your bags, book your flight, and prepare for a journey into the heart of tropical luxury. Bali is waiting to welcome you with open arms and, if you’re anything like me, it may just steal a piece of your heart in the process.
